My Appetite for Destruction: Sex, and Drugs, and Guns N' Roses

My Appetite for Destruction: Sex, and Drugs, and Guns N' Roses - Lawrence J. Spagnola, Steven Adler As it appears on The Accidental Reader: My Appetite for Destruction by Steven Adler book review

I have a really bad feeling that the synopsis of the book will be longer than my review and I feel bad for that.

I am sure by now that you all know that I am a huge GNR fan and that I read all the three biographies (Slash , It's So Easy and Other Lies). I liked the other ones so much especially Duff's but I am a little disappointed with this one if not completely.

Ok so like every autobiography book Steven starts with his painful childhood but he doesn't really give to the reader the chance to understand how he felt back then when his mother kicked him out of the house repeatedly because of her boyfriend. He doesn't even analyze why his mother chose her boyfriend over her kid. It's crazy.

As the book moves on we can see how Steven came to be a punk of the street and how his love for music begun. And that's where I start to hate the book. Slash said in his autobiography that Steven acted like a 10 year old all the time and that he could never shut up and that;s exactly what i saw in this book. A kid telling us about his mischief's and bragging about himself all the time through the end of the book and seriously that was so so so so so annoying. It would never be over.

Of course that didn;t stop there. He went on giving us disturbing and disgusting descriptions of stuff he did with girls and how he liked to do this and that with them. Ok I take back the thing i said about rock stars describing sex situations, I dont want to read something like that ever again.

I really felt bad for his wife after Adler got kicked out of the band and I really dont believe any of the accusations he has against his ex bandmates. There were all kids at the time and they didn;t know how to control some things especially since they were under pressure from the record company and half of the time lost in their own little world of drugs BUT i can never believe that they were so cold hearted and mean. I just think Steven saw it that way towards the end of his career because most of the time he was paranoid from drugs.

After the fall he goes on about his hardships and how he dealt with it but what i didnt like is that he was still stuck up with the idea of GNR doing this to him. Well he would have continued with the band and he would get the same results like everyone else did.

To sum it up real fast Steven Adler wrote a-ok book about his life but he gave me the impression that he is one of those stuck up 80's rockstars that had fame once and don't want to move on and do something else and even if they do it;s similar to what they achieved back then.

p.s. the review was as long as the synopsis after all.

The Shadowhunter's Codex

The Shadowhunter's Codex - Cassandra Clare, Joshua Lewis Before you condemn me to the depths of Hell for the 2 stars that I gave to the book please let me tell you that I am a huge fan of the Mortal Instruments and the Infernal Devices. So what went wrong with this one? I will tell you.

I hated hated hated the fact that Clare decided to write this book.
As it appears on the Accidental Reader: The Shadowhunter's Codex by Cassandra Clare

First of all, there is nothing new in this book expect the funny scribbles of Jace, Clary and Simon on the margins of the page. That made me laugh hence the two stars. Other than that I think the book was destined to be a merchandising trap for MI fans around the world. Clare spend those pages for things we already know and learned through the series. both ID and IM.

I thought the book would be written in a more sophisticated way, it would be more stern and give the impression of something serious but it was exactly the opposite. The writing was not as I expected it to be and that was really bad because it ruined the whole experience with the Sacred Book of the Shadowhunters.

It gave me the feeling that it was written in a haste and that the author was two timing it with something else. I hated it and it left me dissapointed because I was looking forward to it.

So my opinion is dont read this book there is nothing new in there or something that you will need for the last book of the Mortal Instrument Series.

Reflected in You

Reflected in You - Sylvia Day As it appears on The Accidental Reader: Reflected In You by Sylvia Day book review

In the second book of the Crossfire trilogy we have the whole cliche plot...the chaos. The first book was amazing in its own way this one broke my heart even further although I couldnt connect to Eva as I connected to Gideon.

I felt Gideons feelings more in this book than in the first and I think it had to do with his absence. The couple fought all the time that Gideon always left and never came back for days. Both of them are stubborn and stupid but I hated Eva with all my heart in this one.

To be honest the second installation of the book isn't anything great because we all have seen this before (Twilight, Evermore, Fifty Shades etc etc etc) but Day has a way with words that keeps you reading and reading and reading until you reach a point where you say more. This book is a lot more intense and heart breaking than the first one and I wonder that the hell will happen on the third one.

I liked the way she connected things although some of them go unsolved or unmentioned and end up being lost in those snakepits where the reader just asks why did this happen? or what happened to this?

Put this aside you have a good book of sex (hm hm porn) with a little twist of romanticism and sadism (Submissive and the Alpha male), I like that a lot and like a said the way the book is written makes you want more.

To wrap it up, in this boo dont expect anything new its just a book of sex with some spices thrown in and a very good writer to move its strings.
On with the Third One.

Slash

Slash - Slash, Anthony Bozza As it Appears on: The Accidental Reader- Slash by SLash and Anthony Bozza book review

I am a huge fan of guns and roses and naturally of Slash. When this books got into my hands I started reading an amazing and hard to believe story of one of the hardest and toughest rock stars on this planet.

Since I am a huge fan I knew some things but I didn't know others. This book took me aback.
Slash start the book with where he was born and a brief telling of his first years. He then moves on to live in England and how he remembers his parents and of course the big move to L.A. and how that and the fact that he grew up in the seventies changes his life dramatically.

From a very young age drugs, music and excessive alcohol drinking lead his to weird and scary situations. He took those habits with him through the years and he never stopped living on the edge. In comparison to Duff's memoir Slash was tells all about the ugly side of GNR and how each member of the band and what lead them to eventually estrange from each other. It seems that everyone wanted the same thing - to perform and be a great band - but no one stood up when Axl did what he did. I think Axl had a really good ego and took advantage of it when he knew that the alcohol induced band mates wont bat an eye or confront him for his actions.

From page one of the book you can see that Slash was indeed a very clever man but he didn't always use his brain when he had too part because of the drugs that kept him in a haze...i have to say that in some parts some situations either were the wrong date or he wasnt quite sure about them. Slash himself said that he was using some of his agendas to state a few facts because he wasn't sure if something happened or not.

I would like to know more about the lawsuits for the rights and everything after GNR broke up and a lot more about Axl although Slash tries to do its best to excuse his weird and ego centered behavior by saying that ''I'm sure Axl had his reasons''. Of course as Duff said Axl could be more than a good friend with you if you took him on your good side but overall he was a very unpredictable person.

After the GNR years you can see how difficult it was for Slash to create another band and how everything went to hell after the industry changed in the late 90's. Also you can see that those people were used a lot from the industry because simply they were dollar machines. The book describes the process of the creation of Velvet Revolver and how difficult it was for them to find a singer that fits with the group.

Both Slash and Anthony Bozza did a great job with writing the book and making it ''sound'' like Slash. It was a book of almost 500 big pages and small little letters it drove me crazy to finish it but I loved every bit of it.

I wouldnt recommend this book to a kid under 14 due to strong language and mature situations.

Bared to You

Bared to You - Sylvia Day As it appears on The Accidental Reader: Bared to You Book Review by Eleni

I have to say that this is my second romance - erotica novel that i have read and it is phenomenal.
Although, at some points its cheesy the way that Day writes made me turn the pages like crazy.

This book contains strong language and crazy love scenes that i would only recommend to hormone mature people...

I loved the characters and how well are made, how their flaws match with our own and how i was bonded with them. I loved the whole dominant male and Day did a really good job with the sex god Gideon Cross who is now one of my favorite book characters. He is not perfect but he is awesome in his own hot steamy sexy way and i love love love him for that.

Eva on the other side is the broken heroin that saves the broken hero. Its cheesy and classic on this particular genre (but not only) but its made so good that the whole things comes to match the needs of a woman in love. She has her insecurities and her demands and jealousy is something i can totally relate with.

The sex scenes were amazing and the language had nothing to do with 50 Shades...it was a lot more intense and weird at some points but it totally made you feel things.

The books explores the side effects of sexual (and not only) abuse two people suffered and how they did with it in a relationship. How it affects them and what they try to do to make the situations better. So the whole book isn't only about sex but also about healing and understanding and dealing with your past and the wounds it left on you.

I'm totally reading book two and three.

Clockwork Princess

Clockwork Princess - Cassandra Clare As it appears on The Accidental Reader: Clockwork Princess by Cassandra Clare book Review

Okay, here we go. It took me two whole days to come up with a review for this...book. This book that tore my heart in two and made me so freaking angry and made me lost it totally..is one of the greatest books I ever read on this genre.

I wont spoil anything at all but what I will say to you is that go buy, download, loan whatever this book right now and start reading. It will drive you crazy and i have to say that you will be pulling your hair with utmost despair.

The characters are all the same and the story starts from where it was left on the Clockwork Prince and then everything goes to hell literally. Tessa is about to marry Jem and the rest of the Shadowhunters try to figure out what to do with the infamous Mortmain. Suddenly, when everything is going bad Will comes up with the news that there is no yin fen for purchase anymore due to the fact that Mortmain bought everything. And the downfall starts.

I really hated the fact that Clare had to totally tear her characters apart in this book and have everyone suffer as much as possible - with the only exception of Will who suffers a lot more than the others. Tessa has found herself in a love triangle again but this time the weight goes towards Will - but wait..she is not sure. I dont know how Clare did this but Tessa gave me the impression (Again) that she was trying to convince herself that she loved Jem, although we all know that she loves Will.

I cant say how much i wanted to cry when Jem was dying and when Will talked to him about some things. How both of them love each other and how each one of them would sacrifice himself for the other. This 10 pages were the most emotional in the whole book. Clare did a good job with words again. She gave a great description of how the bond of a parabatai ends and how it really feels. It was just heartbreaking and amazing.

I want to make a huge spoiler but i cant because i told you i wont but towards the end of the book all of you will get a huge shock. I thought i would die because what happened goes beyond imagination and seriously i think that what happened is a huge slap in the face for Jem...poor, kind Jem but for that part and only i am so glad that i read the book.

In the whole book what i DID NOT LIKE AT ALL IS THE EPILOGUE. Seriously??? 15 pages for 130 years of life????Okay i have to say that some lines made me tear up and think about it after i finished the book and i have to give that to Clare -she can make you cry with just one line. But what really happened in the last 4 pages is what made me so angry. What happens is kinda weird when it comes to honor and respect and also She leaves you with the impression that there's gonna be more but i dont think it will be more. Agh!!!!

Cassandra Clare's Clockwork Princess is one of my favorite books now and i will return to it sometime in the future.

Clockwork Prince (Infernal Devices)

Clockwork Prince (Infernal Devices) - Cassandra Clare Clockwork Prince by Cassandra Claire Book Review  As it appears on  Accidental Reader: Clockwork Prince by Cassandra Claire book review

As always I don;t know what to say about Claire's books. The use of words and the depth of the characters take you to 1880's London and make not to want to leave.     First of all, this book is a little more different from the first one. To be honest I thought that I would drop the first one because (let's face it) it was a little bit boring.   This one though is so much different. It's so much more intense and has so many scenes that are romantic and sexy but also so so so annoying because we all know Claire and how she likes to torture her characters (and the readers too). Claire takes the love triangle in a whole other level. It makes you wanna rip the pages from the book with utter madness. I don;t want to spoil it for you but there is going to be a lot of disappointment in the end for most of us.         The depth of the characters is amazingly good, I love the bromance of Jem and Will and I hate that both of them love Tessa and each one of them is so proud to talk to each other about their feelings until the very end where everything goes to hell and it's too late for a certain one.         For some reason Will reminds of Jace (Mortal Instruments) and to be honest although a little fun and familiar it is kinda boring, at least Claire would change Will a bit and make him more of a...gentleman since we are talking about Queen Victoria's London.        Tessa on the other side is a whole new characters (at least for me). Altough brave and generous, she seems to lose it big time in the end of the book giving the reader the impression that she is doing things she doesn't want to do but need to be done out of pity...and that is bad. But as a weak person that I am Tessa has a special spot in my heart for being so good.         Jem in this books is more adorable than ever and more sexy than ever all at the same time. Although, I will never forgive him for doing what he did. This is a really sad book and I am afraid that the next one will be much much worse.               Overall Claire did an incredible job with the book and Im not disappointed at all at it because honestly it drives you crazy with anticipation and pure agony.

The Moon and More

The Moon and More - Sarah Dessen As it appears on The Accidental Reader: Sarah Dessen Book Review

The book for me was a piece of art. Although I am not familiar with Dessen's novels I have to say that she did a great job when it comes to character development and realism. All the characters have human traits and no one is perfect there is so much diversity that I believe anyone can relate himself to one. Not lot of authors have the ability to do that.
There is the girl that cares about all, the b*** who is also sentimental deep down, the overly attached - overly worrying mother and of course the awesome but douche boyfriend and the cool friends and sister. I found all the characters funny and clever (except a certain person who in the end turned 160 around) thus the book has a good sense of humor and i like funny books.
What I didn't really like was the story. I saw the whole book but I continued reading because I went through a same phase when i was leaving for college a couple of years ago. I liked that Dessen showed how a departure of one person can change not only his life but others too. How everyone is start seeing this person and how they try to figure out how to treat him. As an adult or as a child? Through my experience this is the worst thing that can happen to a parent - the kid wants freedom the parent refuses to see that due to fear of what might change.
The writing was really really good and I felt like i was walking around Colby and i liked that a lot!!!
I am sure the book will appeal to anyone that is ready to leave for college and also likes summer readings.

Two Boys Kissing

Two Boys Kissing - David Levithan As it appears on The Reader: Two Boys Kissing Book Review

I finally finished the book after a hectic week and i dont know how to rate this book.

The book starts with a gay prom and how it got organised. We get to ''meet'' the main characters of the book that soon we will follow through their battle with anguish, inner demons etc.

I loved the fact that all the characters are being connected in the book through on event: The Big Gay Kiss (thats how i call it). Two boys decide to break the world record of the longest kiss by kissing for 32+ something hours in the front lawn of their school. And thats when everything start.

The gay couples around the book deal with their demons. Some of them try to make their families acknowledge the fact that their gay, others avoid their families after being discovered and some of them battle with the social life that surrounds them. What they have is common is that each one of them finds refuge in the end.

What i found weird in this book is the narration. Some dead boys narrate the whole story referring to their selves as we which is kinda pathetic in the beginning but you will get used to it as i did. I liked the way Levithan chooses his words and tries to pass a message through this book: You are not the first one going through this, others been there too and there is always help even if you cant see it.

Also, i felt a little detached from the main characters probably because of the narration and if there was one thing that i would change in this book that would be it.

Definetely a good gay book that i would recommend.

Shadow and Bone

Shadow and Bone - Leigh Bardugo As it appears on The Reader: Shadow and Bone by Leigh Bargudo book review

Some of you will probably condemn me for not finishing this book. I can't make a full review because didn't read the whole thing but i have to say that it is well written but not my style. At all. I couldn't even push myself to page fifty for that matter.

It will appeal to all of the fantasy readers out there and i really hope you will enjoy it more than i did.

I won't promise anything but i will try to come back to this book somewhere in the future.

It's So Easy: And Other Lies

It's So Easy: And Other Lies - Duff McKagan As see on The Reader: It's So Easy and Other Lies by Duff McKagan book review

I don't know what to say about this book or the author. Duff Fucking McKagan has been a huge inspiration to me since my early teens. Guns N' Roses is my favorite rock band and i love all the members but a little more Duff. I always knew that rock has to do with drugs but that was something else. To be honest i never read anything like that in my entire life. Neon Angel by Cherrie Currie is not even close to the things described in this book.

When i started the book i didn't know what to expect, i just wanted to read about Guns N Roses and the life they led before they become famous and its true that Duff did a great job with describing his early childhood/teen years and how everything shaped around the name of GNR. I was surprised from a lot of things and i needed more and more and more. I loved the way he wrote.

As the book progressed we could see how deep in addiction Duff and his bandmates fell and how fame and money eventually changed everything. How the band mates got estranged from each other and how a certain member suffered from megalomania which resulted in the band to eventually split in 1997. Although the book answered a lot of questions it created new ones and at some points i found myself screaming Why????

I would loved to have read a little more descriptive situations and especially about the fallout between Axl and Slash. For obvious reasons there is no sex scene descriptions in the whole book (im sure no rock star would want their daughters read about their fathers um....experiences (?)).

I was amazed on how Duff got out of the cocaine-alcohol addiction pit and did his best to recover and how to this day he is still suffering from his past. Although i think Duff doesnt realize it he got out from one addiction with another - exercising and i think although this is kind of healthy it can also destroy you if you are not careful.

The book also focuses on the musical career of Duff before and after GNR and the differences that he saw. How people accepted him back then and how they accept him now - everything is easy when you are a legend.

Duff did a great job with a book and i would totally recommend it to any GNR fan out there and not only.

Between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea

Between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea - April Genevieve Tucholke The following reviews is available at The Reader: Between the Devil and The Deep Blue Sea Review

Initially i would read this book in 2014...it was on my reading list...was...exactly. I read this book within hours and i need more...more...more...more...
This book is the reason i want to wait for all the books of the series to be released so i can marathon those shit. It was that great.

It starts with Violet thinking back at her grandmother talking about the devil and how nostalgia tortures her. Throughout the novel Violet (and the author) make sure that we get that she had a great friendship with her now dead grandmother. As the plot progresses Violet comes face to face with a boy that is both mysterious and dangerous,,,she finds herself doing and feeling things she never did before and that makes the reader want more due to the amazing vocabulary the author chose.

The characters:
Violet although eccentric in her own nerdy way is also sweet and loving and caring and a snob. In other words not the perfect protagonist we all have accustomed to and that makes this book original. I loved loved the way she annoyed me with her stupidity at some parts of the book.

River is my new favorite protagonist. He didn't make it through the top 5 but definetely in the top 10. He is so mysterious and sexy and no matter his lies he still wins the reader. That means something right? I liked the way she annoyed Violet and how he evaded her questions all the time.

Luke and Sunshine are the same dull and crazy for sex people for me. They are the classic teens. Sunshine with her overconfidence and Luke the guy who pretends to be tough but he is softer than a blanket. I really liked that those two hook up a lot through the book cuz they are alike (a lot). I loved the subtle role of Luke as the old brother towards Violet but i hated the way she treated him.

The Grandmother: Well i am so sure that she will play a huge role in the following books. I wont spoil it for you but she also plays a role in this book too...she was one naughty belle when she was young.

The author did a good job developing the characters...making none of them perfect and i think that contributed in making the reader see them more human and relate himself with them. Big applause for that please.

The Plot:
I have to say that at some points i guessed a few things and i was right but i didn't expect the ending to be such a big surprise to me. That made the book a whole lotta better and a little more original.
The author did a great job with the descriptions and the words making the reader feel like sitting next to Violet and River. I could smell the rain while reading certain parts and thats not happening with a lot of books.

Overall this is one of my favorite books so far and i cant wait for the next ones to be released. I totally recommend it.

Towering

Towering - Alex Flinn The review will also be available at : The Reader: Towering book review

I finally finished reading Towering no...it's not that good. I thought that Flinn created a nice retelling of a classic story that every kid heard before going to bed but i was wrong. This book is nothing like beastly...it's inferior to it.

Let's start with the characters:
To be honest although i am a die hard for romance novels i hate insta-love. I want the characters to make each other suffer a little before confessing to each other, i want to feel this agony, this craziness that makes me turn pages like crazy in order to finally read the part where they get together and i didn;t experience that in this book...not at all. When Wyatt met Rachel it was boring and predictable...it lacked the sparkle. The author wanted us to feel the same thing as Wyatt and Rachel but her attempt fell flat. And no it's not the fact that i have read so many books that i find nothing fascinating anymore, because with Easy by Tamara Webber i was shivering with every scene i read.
Their relationship seems superficial and the only part that gives you a slight glimpse of their actual connection comes for a couple pages and then fades away in the author's rush to finish the book.

The Plot:
It was pretty good for a fairy tale retelling...modernly. I didn;t see the twist coming and to be completely truthful with you i didn't even had the slightest suspicion of what would happen. That was great of her.
Now what put me completely off was the ending. Although Flinn made a great job with keeping you reading ,choosing carefully her words did a terrible mistake (unforgivable) with the ending.

The Ending:
I found the last few chapters of the book completely stupid. It dind;t make any sense and i felt like the author wanted to get the book out of the way as fast as she could. It was rushed and not well written and i really wanted to give up on the last 20 pages. Why would you write a whole book and just change your attitude towards the end???? It was disappointing.

I don't know if i would like to spend my time reading this book on reading something else but i now know that i wont be reading any other books of Flinn unless something really good comes up. Although it kept me reading i would prefer it if it was a written a little more careful.

A Trick of the Light

A Trick of the Light - Lois Metzger I picked up this book from the new releases section at the local public library. Actually I didn't even look at the cover of the book or the title. Sometimes i like that..not to know what im gonna read.
So the books starts with Mikes subconscious describing a scene with Mike and his friend Tamio. Initially i thought that someone else was looking at Mike I had no idea that Mike;s self narrated the whole book and it took me some pages to understand it.

A Trick of The Light is a really really weird read. Last year i went through some excruciating dieting myself, taking out valuable food and eating only greens - which resulted in a life that maintaining control and never exceed the 1200 calories that i had set myself as a daily nutrition intake. Sometimes i had to go to the bathroom and throw up due to remorse that i ate 200 more calories. Does it sound crazy? Exactly that's what i saw in this book - MYSELF EXACTLY A YEAR AGO.

As we follow Mike through the book through his mind;s eyes we see a totally healthy boy going through their parents broken relationship and eventually divorce. He finds himself alone and completely neglected by his family. To his weakest point his mind makes him believe that everyone around his is the enemy. No one want good things to happen to Mike and that starts when Mike sees himself in a weird mirror that he is fat and later a comment that comes from his coach make Mike a completely different person. He is starting to work out and cut back on his nutrition intake. His only friend seems to be a girl called Amber that plays a huge role over Mikes downfall.

As the books moves on we see the aspects of anorexia and what can happen to people. How they change completely (body and mind) and how they see their surroundings. I never thought that this book will show the hidden aspect of anorexia and that it can affect boys too. The author did a really good job describing Mike and his thoughts and inner demons but also i loved that she payed attention to the fact that you can be helped and recover. She highlights the rehab centers and the actions that they take but also throws a message towards bad parenting and how a parent improves with methods after his child suffers an illness implying that parents should always be responsible and caring with the children.

She finishes a book with a great paragraph and i have to say that i will read this book sometime soon.
